Overnight Shelter

Winter Overnight Shelter Opportunity

  • During the winter months, there is need for men’s shelter beds in addition to those at Bethesda Mission, so CCU organizes a shelter from Dec. 1 – March 31 of each year. The shelter is located at 1805 N. 12th, just east of Cameron St. in the building of Susquehanna Harbor Safe Haven

  • Groups commit to providing two volunteers each night from 7:30 pm through 7 am, for a period of 3 – 7 days. The volunteers are present to be a friendly presence to the overnight guests, interacting with them before lights out at 10 pm and waking them and making coffee in the morning so that the shelter space is cleared by 7 am.  Occasionally a guest may need to be asked to leave if they are being unruly, but that is a rare occurrence, and there is staff back-up at the Susquehanna Harbor Safe Haven in case of emergency.

  • There is a paid intake staff person present from 7:30 – 10 pm to make sure volunteers are oriented and that everyone is settled for the night

  • Each group is asked to have a volunteer coordinator/point person that will take responsibility to be sure volunteers are present for the nights for which the group has committed.

  • To learn more about this unique volunteer opportunity, contact Darrel Reinford, Executive Director of CCU, at 717-230-9550 or dreinford@ccuhbg.org.  If you are interested in volunteering but are not a part of a church/other group, contact Darrel to be put on a list for nights that individual volunteers are needed.
