Description of Volunteer Opportunities

  • Adopt A Room at Susquehanna Harbor Safe Haven (SHSH)

    Help paint, furnish and prepare a room at Susquehanna Harbor Safe Haven, to provide a home for a formerly homeless man.

  • Social Groups at SHSH

    Bring a group to provide a social activity to the formerly homeless men who are residents at Susquehanna Harbor Safe Haven.

  • Compassion Action Network

    Work with other volunteers and grassroots groups to support people living on the streets of Harrisburg.

  • Organize your family, church, school, civic group or work place to gather items for Welcome Home kits for homeless individuals and families attaining an apartment.

  • Rally your family, church, school, civic group or work place to gather trial size toiletries to make shower kits for people currently living on the street.

  • Tangible Items Management

    Helping to organize and manage our inventory of items used to create welcome home kits and shower kits and other tangible items.

  • HELP Ministries

    Provide office support or make follow-up calls to past program clients to encourage them and track their progress.

  • Winter Overnight Shelter For Men

    Volunteer for evening hospitality at this overnight sleeping space for men during the cold winter months.

  • Winter Overnight Shelter for Women and Non-Binary Persons

    Volunteer for evening hospitality at the only winter walk-in shelter for women in Harrisburg, which also provides space for others whose gender identity does not fit with other area shelter.

  • Prison Action Ministries

    Support men and women in Dauphin County Prison as well as citizens returning to the community through mentoring, worship services or community events.

  • Project A.S.K.

    Support youth in West Shore School District by doing a drive for needed items, or helping to organize and manage items collected.

  • Facilities/Maintenance

    Help us keep our buildings active in ministry through your own tangible help, or connecting with contractors and volunteer group that can help.

  • Work Groups

    Bring a group from your church, civic group or workplace for a day of service, including projects such as mailings, cleaning or landscaping.

  • Race & Unity Action Coalition

    Join with church members from east and west shore congregations who are working to break down barriers created by racism and prejudice in our community.

  • Mailing/Office Projects

    Help with mailing projects or other office projects to support our bustling programs for those facing homelessness, poverty or incarceration.

  • Special Event Planning/Fundraising:

    Help promote our United In Love banquet, prison ministry concert, walk, golf tournament or Joy To The Burg Christmas album/concert through planning, promotion, auction item recruitment, and sponsor solicitation.

  • Administration/IT

    Support our ministry behind the scenes by assisting with administrative programs, data entry, or other technical support.

  • Social Media/Web/Photography/Public Relations

    Help us tell our story by creating written or photographic content that can be shared in our e-news, social media and website, or help with other public relations efforts.

  • Riverboat Service/Ecumenical Events

    Support our summer Sunday morning worship services on the Pride of the Susquehanna Riverboat by leading worship, preaching, or serving as a greeter, or assisting with other ecumenical events.

  • Board/Governance

    Lend your expertise by serving on a committee in areas such as finance, programming, fundraising, or personnel to strengthen our organizational leadership.
